Stress-related hair loss - any remedies that work?

I used to have very thick and full hair and over the past year and it has thinned out to the point where you can almost see my scalp on the top of my head. A hairdresser said that it was a stress-related problem because hairdye, while damaging your hair, will not make it fall out that much and since it was only on the top and the rest of my hair isn't falling out. Is there anything I can do for the hair to grow back? Any products I can use?? I am an 18 year old female and as you can imagine, this is kind of embarassing. I'm really worried that it might keep falling out. I have stopped dying my hair (just in case) and I use thickening shampoos (I don't think those work, but whatever) but it's still the same.

If anybody has any solutions; store-bought, home-made, change in diet, vitamins, ANYTHING, I am willing to try it.
